The design of the coins is very militaristic and harks back to ancient Greek imagery. They have reeded edges, which were used as a security mechanism against shaving. Design of the Standing Liberty Quarter. The Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon MacNeil. The obverse features Lady Liberty stepping through a gate. She faces to the right and has a shield facing the same way. Both were used in reference to the war in Europe. The gate bears the national motto, &###x201C;IN GOD WE TRVST&###x201D; (the U is shaped like a V), with two words on either side of Liberty. Thirteen stars, representing the original thirteen colonies, run down the edges of the gate&###x2019;s opening. In MacNeil&###x2019;s words, Liberty is &###x201C;stepping forward in &###x2026; the defense of peace as her ultimate goal. &###x201D; Peace is symbolized by the olive branch in Liberty&###x2019;s right hand. The word &###x201C;LIBERTY&###x201D; arches along the top of the rim, with extra space between the B and the E for Liberty&###x2019;s head. The coin&###x2019;s date is inscribed under her feet. On the reverse is a naturalistic image of an eagle. It is shown in flight from a point of view that is level with it. It is flying toward the right side of the coin with its wings fully spread out above it. Between its wings is the motto &###x201C;E PLURIBUS UNUM&###x201D; (From many, one), which comes from the Great Seal of the United States. &###x201C;UNITED STATES&###x201D; arches along the rim at the top. Under it are the words &###x201C;OF AMERICA, &###x201D; which are inscribed horizontally. The coin&###x2019;s face value, &###x201C;QUARTER DOLLAR, &###x201D; is at the bottom. Thirteen stars, seven on the left and six on the right, adorn the rim space between the inscriptions. Of silver, which is a convenient size for those who use silver in local commerce. From a local estate clean out. We broke one roll open to photograph and checked to make sure they are all 90% silver. Didn’t pick through dates beyond noticing there is a fair number of older dates- not just your typical 50’s and 60’s rolls. On the roll we photographed, there were several 1934’s, a number from the 40’s. Average circulated ranges up to several coins in XF-AU or better.
