The design of the coins is very militaristic and harks back to ancient Greek imagery. They have reeded edges, which were used as a security mechanism against shaving. Design of the Standing Liberty Quarter. The Standing Liberty Quarter was designed by Hermon MacNeil. The obverse features Lady Liberty stepping through a gate. She faces to the right and has a shield facing the same way. Both were used in reference to the war in Europe. The gate bears the national motto, IN GOD WE TRVST (the U is shaped like a V), with two words on either side of Liberty. Thirteen stars, representing the original thirteen colonies, run down the edges of the gates opening. In MacNeils words, Liberty is stepping forward in the defense of peace as her ultimate goal. Peace is symbolized by the olive branch in Libertys right hand. The word LIBERTY arches along the top of the rim, with extra space between the B and the E for Libertys head. The coins date is inscribed under her feet. On the reverse is a naturalistic image of an eagle. It is shown in flight from a point of view that is level with it. It is flying toward the right side of the coin with its wings fully spread out above it. Between its wings is the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM (From many, one), which comes from the Great Seal of the United States. UNITED STATES arches along the rim at the top. Under it are the words OF AMERICA, which are inscribed horizontally. The coins face value, QUARTER DOLLAR, is at the bottom. Thirteen stars, seven on the left and six on the right, adorn the rim space between the inscriptions. Of silver, which is a convenient size for those who use silver in local commerce. Because they consist of real silver, the coins can also be used as teaching tools by those explaining the history of American currency.
