The Washington quarter is the current pattern for the quarter dollar which began its production in 1932. Over the course of its mintage the Washington quarter has undergone several changes in composition and patterns, however the obverse depicting the bust of George Washington has remained for the most part, the same. Starting in 1930, plans to replace the Standing Liberty quarter were underway, and the Commission of Fine Arts supported sculptor Laura Gardin Fraser’s Washing medal to be adapted to fit the quarter design. Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon however, started a competition for the quarters redesign and chose John Flanagan’s submissions for the new pattern. The first pieces were struck beginning in 1932, and by August 1st, 1932 the Washington quarter began it’s almost 70 year circulation. In 1965, the U. Mint ceased to strike the quarter in 90% silver, and instead it was replaced with a copper-nickel alloy. Flanagans original design would be struck until 1999 when the Statehood quarters replaced the reverse. The obverse however was kept mostly the same, with only slight modifications. Parameters set for the original 90% silver strikes were as follows. 100 copper composition, net weight of. Pure silver, a total weight of 6.25 grams with a 24.3 mm diameter featuring a reeded edge. Each roll will be packaged in a plastic tube. The photos provided represent the same product you will receive, not the exact roll pictured. Designed by Hermon A. MacNeil, the inception of the Standing Liberty quarter arose when Director of the Mint Robert W. Wolley erroneously called for a redesign of the Barber coinage in 1915 having misunderstood earlier legislation. Originally when MacNeil submitted his designs, the mint asked for modifications to be made, and the new revisions MacNeil included depicted dolphins to represent the ocean, as well as a militaristic depiction of the Goddess of Liberty in defensive position to represent protection. After the revisions were submitted, mint officials changed the design even further without MacNeils approval. In 1916, the Standing Liberty quarters first year of issue, the obverse featured the Goddess of Liberty in a standing position with a shield. Collectors will note in the first year of issue the date is raised. Pieces struck until 1925 will have this raised date. Mint directors noticed the dates on pieces struck up until 1925 were being worn too easily and called for a redesign which recessed the date and punched it inwards. The obverse also featured Liberty bear breasted, however starting the following year in 1917, MacNeil changed the design, which depicts Liberty in a chainmail vest after controversy arose with the original design. The reverse featured a bald eagle in flight with thirteen stars on the sides. When MacNeil redesigned the obverse in 1917, he also changed the positioning of the stars on the reverse from seven on one side and six on the other, to five stars on each side of the eagle with three stars appearing below it. Parameters set for the Standing Liberty quarter were. 100 copper composition, a net weight of. Pure silver, total weight of 6.25 grams, and featured a 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge. A Roll of 40 mixed & full date 90% silver barber quarters in average circulated condition. This listing is for ONE roll of 40 pieces. All coins will be packaged in a plastic tube. The Barber Quarter was a silver quarter dollar designed by Charles E. In 1891, the Director of the Mint Edward O. Leech was authorized by Congress to implement coin redesigns and thus competitions were held that year to find new patterns for silver coinage. However, the rules stated only the winning design(er) would receive a cash prize, therefore many engravers did not submit entries. The entries that were submitted proved to be unsuitable, and Leech instructed Barber to design the dime, quarter and half dollar. After being approved by President Benjamin in November of 1891, minting began the following year. The obverse of the quarter featured the profiled bust head of Liberty with Barbers last initial B at the truncation of the neck. The reverse depicts a heraldic eagle based on The Great Seal of the U. In 1892 only, two varieties appeared on the quarter. The first, the heraldic eagle’s wing covers half of the E in’UNITED’. The second variety exhibits the E being mostly covered by the eagle’s wing. Though the mintage of half dollars halted in 1915, the dime and quarter continued to be produced until 1916 to meet commercial demand. Parameters set for the Barber quarter were. 100 copper composition, a net weight of. Pure silver, total weight of 6.25 grams and featured a 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge.
